Nov 19:Search for Broomfield man on Longs Peak to resume Thursday after no sign found Nov 18:Longs Peak search to resume Wednesday for missing Broomfield manAfter three days of fighting high winds in the search for missing Longs Peak hiker Peter Jeffris, 25, of Broomfield, a Rocky Mountain National Park search and rescue team located his body Thursday during a helicopter scan of the area. The body of Jeffris, a University of Colorado graduate, has been transferred to the Boulder County coroner, where an autopsy will be completed in the coming days.He was found about 200 feet below the Ledges section of the Keyhole Route, according to park spokeswoman Kyle Patterson.”We guess that he fell around 200 to 300 feet, but we’ll be able to know more once the investigation is complete,” Patterson said. “We’re assuming that this happened on Sunday. There’s a lot of questions we’ll never have answers to: Did he slip? Did he fall? We won’t know.”Due to favorable weather conditions, crews were able to launch a helicopter search Thursday morning, Patterson said. High winds had grounded any aerial efforts during the first three days of the search. The harsh weather, which at times included winds 65 mph and above, made recovery efforts “extremely difficult,” Patterson added.”These challenging conditions hampered search operations, particularly above tree line, the past three days,” she wrote in a news release. “With today’s calmer winds, searchers were able to utilize a helicopter, which enhanced our ability to cover a much larger area and ultimately locate Jeffris.”A team of four was flown to a landing spot in the Glacier Gorge drainage, from which point they climbed roughly 1,800 vertical feet to Jeffris’ body.”It’s certainly a very tragic outcome,” Patterson said. “However, there are a lot of searches where the person isn’t found. ‘Closure’ is an overused word, but at least with this, his family and friends know.”Jeffris had been missing since he left Sunday to summit Longs Peak. He did not arrive at work Monday, and his car was later found in the Longs Peak Trailhead parking lot. Jeffris had told friends he was considering the Cables Route on the mountain’s north face, but that he was not prepared to spend the night.William Bolton, a vice president at Altius Space Machines, the Broomfield firm where Jeffris worked, described him as “the best robotics engineer I’d ever met” and said the company is mourning the loss of Jeffris’ “cheerful attitude and enthusiasm.”Trojans embraced underdog role all season, including in title game matchupDENVER This one’s for Jeff!Headed by the same emotions on his sleeve head coach for the past 24 seasons, the Longmont High boys basketball program has been so close, so many times, to achieving the ultimate goal of a state championship.
